Virgin Orbit’s “Begin Me Up” mission was the first-ever orbital mission to raise off from the UK. Sadly, issues did not go to plan when its 70-foot-long (21 meters) LauncherOne rocket suffered an anomaly, stopping it from making orbit.

The corporate’s service aircraft Cosmic Lady lifted off from Spaceport Cornwall on schedule on Monday (Jan. 9) at 5:02 p.m. EST (2202 GMT). The lift-off was celebrated by hundreds of onlookers who had descended on Spaceport Cornwall to be a part of the historic launch. Cornwall Airport Newquay was chosen as the placement for Spaceport Cornwall because it has one of many longest runways of a regional airport within the U.Ok. and direct entry to a flight path over the ocean.

“Begin Me Up” was to be a mission of many firsts: The primary orbital launch from the U.Ok., the primary business launch from western Europe, the primary Omani satellite tv for pc and the primary satellite tv for pc in-built Wales. Right here we check out among the finest photographs from the launch occasion at Spaceport Cornwall.
